YOUTH & ADULT MENTORSHIPS INFO

Class meets twice a month on Wednesdays from 4:00–6:00 p.m. in my private studio in Mapleton, Utah, with occasional plein air sessions at nearby locations. Classes may include guided instruction, individualized projects, work time, group critiques, opportunities to work from life, and lessons inspired by historical master painters. The experience will vary and be personalized to each student's current skillset and goals.

2026 Q4 SCHEDULE

  • October 7 and 21

  • November 4 and 18

  • December 2 and 16

Because class size is limited, enrollment reserves an ongoing spot. Missed classes are not refundable, tuition is not reduced for absences, and make-up classes are not available. If you need to end enrollment, please provide notice at least two sessions (one month) in advance.

WHAT TO BRING

Students should bring their own supplies. The following are my recommendations, however please bring the materials you regularly use.  Depending on what you have, we may be able to work with it or I may encourage you to purchase something in particular.

Here is a link to a list of supplies I recommend, though I am certainly not suggesting you purchase everything in this list. Hopefully it will help you visualize what I’m suggesting. I've added some links to items on this Amazon list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/AKGBKV4SEK29?

Drawing tools:

  • 2H graphite pencil at the minimum, additional pencils that may be helpful are 2B, HB, 4H, and 7H.   (my favorite is Staedtler mars technico mechanical pencil 2H)

  • White charcoal pencil + Strathmore toned gray or tan 80 lb paper  9x12  (fun but not necessary.)

  • Watercolor pad of paper, white, 9x12, cold or hot pressed, 140 lb. Spiral bound. (Canson XL and Strathmore are good enough quality)

  • Kneaded eraser and precision point mechanical eraser

  • Long point pencil sharpener, Staedtler rotary sharpener (if you bought the Staedtler mars technico mechanical pencil 2H)

  • Artist clipboard or light weight, rigid, smooth and flat board (13 x 17 is a good size.  Just make sure it is large enough for a sheet of 9x12 paper on the solid area where the carrying hole isn’t cut out.)

Oil painting supplies:

Please note, safety is important when oil painting.  I know oil painting supplies are an investment.  Please start by bringing what oil painting supplies you already have to review together.  Or only bring drawing tools to start with.

  • Rigid painting surface (please no stretched canvas)  Tobias Made ABS panels are great and cheap for learning on as well as for professionals.  Get a stack of 5x7 or 6x8, a few 8x10, and maybe one or two larger sizes (9x12 or 11x14)  *For more advanced artists doing intentional pieces strada linen panels or a Artefex panel might be preferred.

  • Oil brushes are a bit hard to say exactly what you need.  Definitely long handle, not short.  A variety of sizes, tips, and synthetic/natural or hog hair is helpful.   Bring what you have or grab a few to try from Hobby Lobby or Jerrysartarma.  Feel free to discuss this in class with me. I have a few in my amazon list you can try.

  • Portable and adjustable floor easel. (avoid French easels) An easel or two will be available to borrow during class, but availability is limited. Please contact me in advance if you need to use one.  *Advanced artists or those serious about painting, especially in plein air, I recommend eventually investing in a pochade box.  If you are unsure, let’s talk about it.

  • Gamsol (required.  No turpentine or turpenoid is allowed in my studio.)

  • Stainless steel solvent jar, airtight with rubber seal (required)

  • Blue mechanic shop paper towels

  • Clear, white, or black gloves (nitrile, vinyl, or latex)

  • Flexible palette knife- standard size and shape.  Helpful to buy in person and choose a flexible tip.

  • Palette- for a beginner it may be useful to get a disposable palette pad instead of a nice palette.

  • Palette box.  I like the masterson palette seal.

  • Oil paints  *be careful not to accidentally get water based oil paints.  If thats what you already have, bring them and we can give them a try.

    • Brands and lines appropriate for those new to oil painting and wanting more affordable options:  Winsor & Newton WINTON, Gamblin 1980, etc

    • Brands and lines better suited for professionals, those with some training and ready for advancement OR someone with a strong commitment to long term pursuit of oil painting: Winsor & Newton ARTIST line, Gamblin Artist, Rembrandt, M Graham, Michael Harding, Williamsburg, etc.

    • Staple colors I prefer you have:  titanium white, transparent oxide red, french ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, cadmium red, permanent alizrin crimson, and gamblin solvent free gel.

    • Additional colors I use often (this varies with time, subject, and goals): kings blue light, cadmium yellow deep, naples yellow light, viridian, permanent green light, permanent mauve, transparent oxide yellow, etc.

  • Container or bag to carry your supplies

  • Apron

Please bring your own water bottle or clean snack if desired.

Tuition and Fee Update

Beginning Oct. 2026, the tuition and quarterly “From Life” fee will be combined into one monthly payment. The updated tuition is: $68 per month, with no quarterly fees.

This adjustment makes the monthly payment more consistent and eliminates the separate quarterly charge. Tuition is due by the fifth of each month and reserves the student’s ongoing place in the class, whether or not a particular session is attended.

For new and returning students, please include the $15 registration fee upon registration.
